EBN: Gr.3 victory at Hoppegarten for Matchwinner

A successful couple of days for Gestut Gorlsdorf continued when Matchwinner (Sternkonig), whom it bred, won his second Gr.3 of the season. Last autumn’s Italian Gr.1 winner Potemkin (New Approach) was sent off favourite for yesterday’s 2000m Preis der Deutschen Einheit at Hoppegarten, but he made little show and finished fourth. Amigo (Lord Of England) made the running and was not headed until well down the home straight, when the filly Navaro Girl (Holy Roman Emperor) passed him. In the meantime, Matchwinner had come widest of all into the straight and flew home, collaring the filly inside the last 200m and winning by two and a half lengths, going away.

From a fine family, the winner’s dam Mahamuni (Sadler’s Wells) was acquired by Gorlsdorf after being sold as a nine-yearold at the 2008 Arqana Deauville December Sale. She is a winning full-sister to the Gr.1-winning pair Saffron Walden and Insight and a half-sister to another Gr.1 winner and sire in Dolphin Street (Bluebird), from the family of Gr.1 winners Sequoyah,
Henrythenavigator, Listen and Magician.

Matchwinner (Sternkonig) had made his Stakes breakthrough in a Gr.3 contest at the Hamburg Derby meeting and he came with a late charge here to head Navaro Girl (Holy Roman Emperor) in the final 200m. The longtime leader Amigo (Lord Of England) stayed on for third. The winner had scored four times at three up to handicap level and collected three more victories last season.

He is the seventh of the ten racing-age foals out of the Sadler’s Wells mare Mahamuni, who won in France as a three-year-old. Her first four Irish-born foals included the ten-times scorer Mandalay King (King’s Best) and she was sold to P B Bloodstock for €50,000 at the 2008 Arqana December Sale. Her six subsequent progeny also include the Listed-placed Moi Lolita (Lawman), last Sunday’s German winner Miss Germany (Lord Of England) and a two-yearold Maxios filly named Marilu. Mahamuni is a full-sister to Gr.1 Classic winner and sire Saffron Walden and US Gr.1 victrix Insight and a half-sister to the Gr.1 winner and sire Dolphin Street (Bluebird). The grandam is the dual French Listed winner Or Vision (Irish River), a sister to US Stakes winners Dixie Fine (L’Emigrant) and Nijinsky’s Lover (Nijinsky) and the Listedplaced Litani River (Irish River; grandam of Gr.1 winner and sire Beethoven). Other Gr.1 winners listed under the Stakes-placed third dam Luv Luvin’ (Raise A Native) include Sequoyah, Henrythenavigator, Listen and Magician, plus the Classicplaced Queen Cleopatra and Cliffs Of Moher. Mahamuni produced a Sea The Moon filly in February, who has been named Moon A Lisa.

EBN: Gülden Görl wins at Hoppegarten

This was a successful debut by Gulden Gorl (Iffraaj), who comfortably beat five colts here to become the fifth winner from seven racing-age foals out of the Listed-winning Key Of Luck mare Gold Charm. The mare’s previous produce include the French Listed winner and twice Gr.3-placed Princess Charm (Rip Van Winkle) and the four-time scorer Band Of Gold (Lando). Gold Charm is the best of the ten winners out of Goldkatze (Czaravich), who is a winning half-sister to the Stakes-winning hurdler Goldtaucher (Tauchsport) and the Stakes-placed chasers Gottschalk (Neshad) and Goldschmuck (Tauchsport). Gold Charm’s yearling Sea The Moon filly named Gold was bought by P B Bloodstock for €90,000 at last month’s BBAG sale and she has a filly foal by the same sire.
